Shin Kubota

Shin Kubota is an Associate Professor, Seto Marine Biological Laboratory (SMBL), Field Science Education and Research Center (FSERC), Kyoto University. His primary focus of research is the Turritopsis dohrnii, more commonly known as the Immortal Jellyfish.

The species earned the nickname of “The Benjamin Button of Jellyfish” by transforming itself — at any stage of its development — back to a polyp, the organism’s earliest stage of life, thus escaping death and achieving potential immortality. The jellyfish seems able to survive, and proliferate, in every ocean in the world.
