Tony Noble

Dr. Tony Noble is the Associate Director of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) and the Canada Research Chair in Particle Astrophysics at Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario. He was recently named one of the top ‘next generation’ scientists to watch by Time magazine.

SNO, located deep beneath the earth’s surface, was created to measure the absolute flux of neutrinos, to understand if neutrinos have mass, and to determine whether they are capable of evolving into other types of neutrinos. This study is considered one of the most important issues in elementary particle physics.

Under Noble’s leadership, SNO researchers achieved their radio-purity goals and published their landmark initial results, which showed that neutrinos do have mass and are capable of evolving.

The SNO laboratory was also recently selected for a $40 million CDN by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation to create an international Facility for Underground Science to pursue ideas for detecting the dark matter in the universe and other fundamental scientific measurements.
