Shivaun Corry

After falling in love with Rumi’s philosophy and poetry while completing her International Baccalaureate, Shivaun Corry moved to Turkey at the age of 19 with only a hip-scarf and her trusty fiddle. Having previously studied only classical dance forms such as Ballet and Bharatanayam, she was immediately attracted to bellydance’s defiance of patriarchal categorization: its mixing of the spiritual and the sexual.

Studying under dancers such as Funda Pakis, Ahu Ozkaran, and Nesrin Topkapi, Corry’s love of Turkish culture led her to release an album of Turkish folk songs with Sony/Columbia records.  A desire to pursue media studies then led her to Vancouver where she is currently studying communications at Simon Fraser University and continues to work in television, film and radio. Her first documentary film has recently been nominated for a young filmmakers award from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
