Phil Nuytten

Phil Nuytten is a Canadian entrepreneur, deap-ocean explorer, scientist, inventor and author who has devoted his career to developing technology that will allow divers to plunge to new depths to safely explore, and ultimately protect, the world’s oceans.

Nuytten’s indefatigable mission to get to the very bottom of the ocean led him, in the 60s and 70s, to become involved in the development of mixed gas decompression tables and to develop the Newtsuit – a cutting edge rotary-joint ‘wearable submarine’ that protects divers from decompression. He has also worked for NASA for over twenty years, experimenting with space applications for his innovative subsea technologies; NASA used his DeepWorker 2000 micro-sub, developed for exploring marine sanctuaries, to recover space shuttle booster rockets.

In 1984 Nuytten graced the cover of National Geographic magazine after his daring exploration of a shipwreck deep under arctic ice. A Canadian of Métis Heritage, he has also written a book on West Coast Indian art.
