Paul Spong

Paul Spong

Paul Spong is the director of OrcaLab, a land-based whale research station in British Columbia.

He began studying dolphins and orcas in 1967 after receiving a Ph.D. in physiological psychology from UCLA. His subsequent insights into the behaviours of dolphins in both captivity and the wild resulted in his involvement with the Save the Whales movement.

Spong returned to full-time research in the 1980s. His current work focuses on the long-term life history of the northern resident community of British Columbia orcas and the protection of orca habitat.

Spong is also involved in the development of technology that connects people to the natural world through the internet.
