Norman Spector

Norman Spector is a Canadian journalist, newspaper publisher, civil servant and diplomat. He writes columns for the Globe and Mail, Le Devoir and the Vancouver Sun.

Spector’s time in civil service culminated in his position as Chief of Staff for Brian Mulroney in the Office of the Prime Minister, where he served from from 1990-1992. For the next three years he was ambassador of Canada to Israel and High Commissioner to Cyprus, and after the signing of the Oslo Peace Accord in 1994 became Canada’s first representative to the Palestinian Authority in Gaza.

Ending his public service in 1996, Spector was then named VP Corporate Affairs for Imperial Tobacco Ltd., and in 1997 was appointed publisher of the Jerusalem Post. In 2003, he wrote Chronicle of a War Foretold: How Mideast Peace Became America’s Fight, a book that collects 50 of his columns and offers his insight into Israeli political history and the response of the West to the Mideast conflict.
