June Callwood

June Callwood was the author of more than thirty books, including Portrait of Canada (1981) and The Man Who Lost Himself (2000).

Among her many accomplishments, Callwood was a columnist with the Globe and Mail, as well as being a television host with CBC’s In Touch, Vision TV’s National Treasures and Prime’s Caregivers.

She was the founder of over 50 social action organizations, including the Writer’s Union of Canada, PEN Canada, The Periodical Writers Association of Canada, The Electronic Rights Licensing Agency, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, Nellie’s Hostel for Women, Jessie’s Centre for Teenagers, and Casey House Hospice.

Callwood was awarded the Order of Canada in 1978, made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1986, and received the Companion to the Order of Canada in 2001, the country’s highest honour. She was inducted into the Canadian News Hall of Fame in 1984 and received the Toronto Arts Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award in 1990, and held seventeen honorary doctorates.
