Jerry X. Mitrovica

Jerry X. Mitrovica was a Professor of Geophysics at the University of Toronto, and is now teaching at Harvard University. He is also the Director of the Earth Systems Evolution Program at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.

Jerry is credited with developing a method for “fingerprinting” modern sea-level changes to determine not only how much sea level has been rising but also what the sources of this rise are. That is, which ice sheets and glaciers are currently melting and by how much? Moreover, he has demonstrated that the future rise in sea level that coastal cities will experience in a warming world will likely be significantly higher than previously thought.

He is a recipient of several prestigious research awards including the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, the A.E.H. Love Medal from the European Geosciences Union, the Steacie Prize from the National Research Council of Canada and the Rutherford Medal from the Royal Society of Canada.
