George Merriam

George Merriam

Merriam specializes in endocrinology, the study of hormones and their disorders, with a particular focus on endocrine aging and neuroendocrinology.

He focuses on the way the brain and hormones communicate with each other to regulate body composition, energy balance and mental function, and the ways natural rhythms and environmental cues affect these interactions.

With undergraduate, graduate and medical degrees from Harvard and Cambridge, he worked at Columbia and McGill Universities and at the National Institutes of Health. His studies in recent years have centered on whether supplementing the hormones that rise at puberty and then decline with aging is an endocrine “fountain of youth.” Merriam is currently Professor of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Outside of work, he serves on a scientific review panel for the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and is a 25+ year member of the Alpine Club of Canada.
