Moore has been called Canada’s most versatile writer of history. For 25 years, he has been presenting fresh takes on Canadian history to non-specialist audiences through many media.

He has written best-selling non-fiction, children’s histories, illustrated books, historical scholarship and commissioned histories.

His awards include the Governor General’s Literary Award, the Mr. Christie Award, the Children’s Literature Roundtable Award and the Secretary of State’s Prize for Excellence in Canadian Studies as well as honours from the Canadian Historical Association and Ontario Historical Society. Quill & Quire named his children’s book, The Story of Canada, one of the ten great Canadian children’s books of the twentieth century.

Moore writes a column on historical issues for the historical magazine The Beaver.  His political and historical commentaries have appeared in numerous publications and he has contributed to reference works including the Canadian Encyclopedia, the Historical Atlas of Canada and the Dictionary of Canadian Biography.
