Bob Hunter

Robert Hunter

Canadian environmentalist, journalist, author and politician Bob Hunter was an environmental crusader and one of the co-founders of Greenpeace. In 1972, as Greenpeace’s first President, he led the first at-sea anti-whaling campaign, which was a major factor in the eventual decision to ban commercial whaling. He was named by Time Magazine among the “Eco-heroes” of the 20th century.

Hunter got his start in journalism in the 1960s, working for the Winnipeg Tribute and the Vancouver Sun. He mostly covered topics in environmentalism and eventually realized that his calling was in a more active milieu. He campaigned against nuclear testing, the Canadian seal hunt and climate change, among other issues, and his methods helped establish the new era of the eco warrior.

Beginning in 1988, Hunter appeared as a commentator and reporter for City TV in Toronto. He also made several documentaries about the Canadian North, and ran for the Ontario Liberal Party in a 2001 by-election.
