How To Make Toronto Better? Learn From The Past

22/06/2023

With the Toronto mayoral by-election just days away, and with a field of over 100 candidates, we’ve been bombarded with ideas by the hopefuls for improving Canada’s largest city. “Toronto is a living thing, let’s treat it with care.” Those were the closing words from community titan and social justice leader Anne Golden when she appeared on our stage – 23 years ago! Today’s candidates would do themselves a favour to watch this Talk, at our first edition – when we were known as TedCity. Anne shared her research and the changes implemented as part of her work on various task forces, including ensuring an effective transit system by investing as much in it as on roads; and by introducing the idea of spreading the burden of social housing. These are practices that got lost in amalgamation, decades ago, but deserve a second run.
